The Yutyrannus. The 'feathered tyrant' brought so much excitement, so much intrigue, to the scientific community when it was first discovered. And here we find ourselves in the presence of that illustrious tyrannosaur. Just don't be too surprised if it ruffles a few feathers, okay?

Yutyrannus is a genus of proceratosaurid tyrannosauroid dinosaur in the Jurassic World Evolution series. Originating from Early Cretaceous Asia, it is the largest known distinctive feathered dinosaur.

Yutyrannus was added to Evolution 2 as a part of the Feathered Species Pack, and its fossils can be excavated from the Yixian Formation. It then returned in the base game of Evolution 3.

Characteristics[]

Living during the Early Cretaceous period around 125 million years ago in what is now Liaoning Province, Yutyrannus is a striking and powerful carnivorous dinosaur from the tyrannosauroid family – a distant relative of the fearsome Tyrannosaurus – that is notable for its incredibly striking nasal crest and the long, stunning feathered coat on its body and tail. In fact, measuring between eight and nine meters in length and weighing at around a ton, Yutyrannus is the largest carnivorous dinosaur known to have feathers – lending it the befitting name Yutyrannus, which translates to "Feathered Tyrant", derived from Mandarin Chinese and Latin. This genus of carnivorous dinosaur is a surprisingly social species.

Paleontology[]

The exact location of Yutyrannus' original discovery are uncertain – the first specimens were obtained via a fossil dealer who claimed they were unearthed from a quarry in Liaoning Province, China, but this has never been officially confirmed. The genus was formally described in 2012 by a team of experts led by esteemed Chinese paleontologist Xu Xing and given the specific name Yutyrannus huali – which translates to "Beautiful Feathered Tyrant"; the Chinese term "huali" meaning "beautiful", likely in reference to its feathers. Measuring between 7.32 and 9 m (24 and 30 ft) long and weighing between 493 and 1,415.3 kg (1,087 and 3,120 lb), Yutyrannus is thus far the largest-known carnivorous feathered dinosaur discovered.

Yutyrannus lived approximately 129–113 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous period in north-eastern China and may have needed its plumage for regulating temperature due to the cold climate. Believed to have been the apex predator of its ecosystem, it coexisted alongside other dinosaurs such as primitive ceratopsian Psittacosaurus, sauropod Dongbeititan, dromaeosaur Sinornithosaurus, oviraptor-like dinosaur Incisivosaurus, and the small theropod Sinosauropteryx. The discovery of three separate specimens together has led experts to believe that Yutyrannus may have hunted in packs, existing on a diet of smaller dinosaurs, mammals and fish.
