You might think that the Sinosauropteryx is the perfect size for a cute plushie to take home, but this dinosaur is a pretty mean hunter for something so small. Trust me, you really don't want this one snapping at your heels!

Sinosauropteryx is a genus of compsognathid dinosaur in Jurassic World Evolution 2. Originating from Early Cretaceous Asia, it was the first feathered dinosaur to be discovered. It is included in the Feathered Species Pack.

Characteristics[]

Native to north-east China and dates back to the Early Cretaceous period, Sinosauropteryx is a small, carnivorous theropod dinosaur notable for its short arms and remarkably long, wavy striped tail, that was thought to be used for balance as it ran on its hind legs. This genus weighs nearly five pounds and grows to around a meter in length. It is a relative of Compsognathus although, unlike its older cousin, it is covered in delicate hair-like feathers. Traditionally named the "Chinese Dragon Bird", Sinosauropteryx is the first known example of a non-avian dinosaur to display feathers, and lead paleontologists towards the theory that modern-day birds evolved from dinosaur reptiles.

The first Sinosauropteryx was discovered in 1996 by local farmer Li Yinfang in Liaoning Province. The find initially caused great controversy, with many experts suspicious of this apparently feathered dinosaur that could not fly, and there is still debate over the exact nature of Sinosauropteryx's feathers to this day. The genus was officially named Sinosauropteryx shortly after it was discovered, the name translating to "Chinese Reptilian Wing".

Paleoecology[]

Sinosauropteryx lived in China approximately 130 to 122 million years ago and is believed to have roamed nearby prairies in search of food. It existed on a diet of small lizards and mammals and evolved to run quickly in pursuit of fast-moving prey.
