Mmm there's certainly something special about this one... a 'je ne sais quoi'. It's a Pyroraptor. Had it not been for a forest fire sweeping through Southern France, our little feathered friend may have gone undiscovered... and my life insurance would be just that little bit cheaper! |
Pyroraptor is a genus of dromaeosaurid dinosaur in Jurassic World Evolution 2. Originating from Late Cretaceous Europe, it was added in the Dominion Biosyn Expansion.
History[]
A Pyroraptor was present in the sanctuary created by BioSyn, and it attempted to kill Owen Grady and Kayla Watts after their plane crashed in its territory.[1]
Characteristics[]
Pyroraptor is a member of the Dromaeosauridae family that lived in Europe during the Late Cretaceous period. Though slightly smaller in comparison to its distant cousins Atrociraptor, Velociraptor, and even Deinonychus, measuring around 2.4 meters in length, Pyroraptor is nevertheless a ferocious, lethal, and intelligent predatory dinosaur, relying on its impressive speed rather than power when stalking its prey and prefers to hunt in packs like its cousins. Its sharp claws help Pyroraptor to catch its prey but are also used for climbing. Most of its body is covered in red feathers that fan out with light gray outer edges along its dark gray body.
Gameplay[]
Behavior[]
The Pyroraptor has a similar temperament to other dromaeosaurids, such as Atrociraptor, Velociraptor, and Deinonychus, preferring to live in a social group of three to four individuals, in enclosures with up to twenty dinosaurs of varying species. As a predator, Pyroraptor is disliked by herbivorous species and other carnivores, though it is liked by scavenger species such as Compsognathus and Sinosauropteryx.
Paleontology[]
Pyroraptor's name translates to "Fire Thief" and is derived from its discovery site ā the first known Pyroraptor remains were unearthed following a forest fire in Provence, southern France in 1992. This specimen consisted of a series of toe claws, a forearm bone and two teeth, while subsequent remains found in Spain were also attributed to Pyroraptor.
Like with the Atrociraptor and Velociraptor, the Jurassic World canon Pyroraptor ā measuring around 2.4 m (8 ft) long and weighing 180 kg (400 lb) ā is significantly larger than its real-life counterpart, which measured under 1.53 m (5 ft) long and weighing less than 9.1 kg (20 lb).
Paleoecology[]
Pyroraptor has been found across western and central Europe and dates back around 83 to 66 million years, when the area had a tropical climate and plenty of water sources. Known from what is now Southern France in the Argiles et GrĆØs Ć Reptiles Formation and and Northern Spain in the Tethys Ocean (both of which were once part of an island landmass known as Ibero-Armorica during the Late Cretaceous), Pyroraptor coexisted alongside a variety of species. Known dinosaurs from its ecosystem are ornithopods (iguanodont Rhabdodon and smaller species Zalmoxes), titanosaurid sauropods (such as Ampelosaurus), abelisaurids (such as Tarascosaurus and the larger Arcovenator, which was perhaps the apex predator of the region), nodosaurids (Struthiosaurus), and other dromaeosaurids. Other animals include azhdarchid pterosaurs, crocodylomorphs (such as Allodaposuchus), snakes, amphibians, birds, and mammals of the time.
