Ornithomimus is a genus of ornithomimosaurid dinosaur in the Jurassic World Evolution series. Originating from Late Cretaceous North America, it was one of the first dinosaurs discovered in United States and is the name sake of the ornithomimid family.

Characteristics[]

Ornithomimus is a slender and very fast bipedal theropod dinosaur with long hind limbs and a large body covered in feathers, as well as a toothless beak. These bird-like, swift-footed dinosaurs measure nearly four meters in length.

Paleontology[]

The namesake of the ornithomimid family of dinosaurs, this species was first described in 1890 based on a partial hind limb dating to the Late Cretaceous period, found in the Denver Formation. In 2015, paleontologists redescribed the species using the same bone fragments. The name Ornithomimus literally means "Bird Mimic", due to its ostrich-like structure. Throughout history, there has always been disagreement over the diet of Ornithomimus; some paleontologists believe they used their signature bony beak to either pluck vegetation or attack prey. Some even believe that not unlike Oviraptor, Ornithomimus was omnivorous.

Paleoecology[]

Paleontologically, not much is known about the Ornithomimus and how it lived. The fossil record suggests it was a cursorial species, meaning it has limbs specially adapted for running, as well as being an herbivore. However, it is known to have lived throughout North America during the Late Cretaceous period, from 77 to 66 million years ago. Its contemporaries were various types of dinosaurs such as ceratopsians, hadrosaurs, ankylosaurus, fellow ornithomimds, troodontids, dromaeosaurs, and the tyrannosaurs as well as different species of pterosaurs. Among them were Triceratops, Dakotaraptor, and the fearsome apex predator Tyrannosaurus.
