This fuzzy little reptile is the Jeholopterus. It's pretty... cute, huh? Well, do you see those tiny little fangs? They'll give you a nasty nip if you're not careful... so be careful!

Jeholopterus is a genus of anurognathid pterosaur in Jurassic World Evolution 2. Originating from Late Jurassic Asia, it is one of the smallest pterosaurs known. It is included in the Feathered Species Pack.

Characteristics[]

The smallest pterosaur in the Evolution series with a wingspan of around 32 inches, Jeholopterus is an anurognathid pterosaur notable for its blunt snout and rows of sharp teeth. Impressively agile and quick in flight, their small stature allows them to soar through the air with ease, chasing down insects for their food. Fossils have been discovered to have been preserved with hair-like pycnofibres and skin remains. Dating back to the Middle Jurassic period, around 164 million years ago, the genus takes its name from the Jehol region of Inner Mongolia that it called home.

Behavior[]

The Jeholopterus is very similar to most other pterosaurs but is the smallest out of all of them, being around the size of a chicken, it only requires 1 Aviary to satisfy its size needs. It will occasionally stop to perch and weirdly does not need to drink any water. It is the first species to feed from the Insect Feeder.

Paleontology[]

This genus was first described in 2002 by a group of palaeontologists including the world-renowned Xu Xing, following the discovery a near-complete skeleton in the Daohugou beds of the Haifanggou Formation in Ningcheng County, north-east China. This well-preserved specimen allowed expert to learn about the genus in detail and reach strong hypotheses on how it lived. With a three foot wingspan, Jeholopterus was one of the smallest pterosaurs known.

Paleoecology[]

Found in Tiaojishan Formation in China, Jeholopterus lived in the forests of Daohugou, where the climate was warm and humid, with a rich variety of flora and fauna. Although most anurognathids fed primarily on insects, Jeholoptertus' relatively large size has led researchers to believe it may also have been a piscivore, using its small, sharp teeth to dart into the water and grab fish swimming near the surface. There, Jeholopterus lived alongside arboreal theropods like Yi qi and Scansoriopteryx, pterosaurs like Sinomacrops from the same family, as well as cynodonts and prehistoric salamanders.
