| I'm not sure about you, but I've not seen anything like this before. Check it out: the Dsungaripterus. This pterosaur would use its curved jaws like a crowbar, levering shellfish out of the mud, before cracking them open with their blunt teeth. That's pretty resourceful, huh? |
Dsungaripterus is a genus of dsungaripterid pterosaur in the Jurassic World Evolution series Originating from Early Cretaceous Asia, this small pterosaur is equipped with a specialized snout used for eating shellfish.
Dsungaripterus was added to Evolution 2 as a part of the Early Cretaceous Pack, and its fossils can be excavated from the Tugulu Group dig site.
Characteristics[]
A medium-sized pterosaur with a wingspan of up to 3 meters, Dsungaripterus is a genus of small and stout pterosaur that lived around 130 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous period. Notable for its large, elongated skull which features long, unusual upcurved jaw, it is also easily recognizable by the distinctive head crest[1] running along the top of its head from the tip of the snout to the back of its skull. Paleontologists speculate this crest might have served as a rudder when flying. Dsungaripterus and its relatives lack the small, sharp teeth of other pterosaurs such as Pteranodon, which suggests that it did not primarily feed on fish. Its beak is curved, ideal for prising shellfish off rocks and sifting through sediment, suggesting its diet was largely comprised of crustaceans.[1] Additionally, Dsungaripterus' jaw narrows to a point and contains no teeth at the front, with a row of flat teeth at the back for piercing the armor of shellfish.[2]
Paleontology[]
The discovery of Dsungaripterus came in 1964, when Chinese paleontologist Yang Zhongjian recovered a partial skeleton from the Junggar Basin in the north west of China. In fact, the name Dsungaripterus means "Junggar Wing" ā and further investigation of the site led to the excavation of a more complete skeleton in 1973. Dsungaripterus was an average-sized pterosaur, with a wingspan of 3 to 3.5 m (9 to 11 ft).
Paleoecology[]
Dsungaripterus lived in Asia during the Early Cretaceous period, around 130 million years ago. It lived alongside other Early Cretaceous Asian dinosaurs such as Wuerhosaurus. Dsungaripterus preferred to live near shallow water and mudflats as it existed on a diet of small fish, crustaceans and worms ā although it may have preyed upon smaller pterosaurs as well. Experts hypothesising that this carnivoreās strange appearance is an evolutionary trait designed to allow easy extraction of shellfish hidden in rocks.
